Nationwide Apple Juice Recall: Over 133,000 Cases Pulled from Shelves Due to Arsenic Concerns
In a significant health alert, a recall of apple juice products sold across multiple major retailers has expanded, affecting more than 133,000 cases nationwide. The Associated Press reports that this growing concern revolves around elevated levels of inorganic arsenic in juice produced by Refresco Beverages, a Florida-based manufacturer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initiated this recall due to potential health risks associated with consuming the affected products.
Details of the Recall
The recall began on August 15, 2024, focused originally on 9,800 cases of Great Value brand apple juice sold at Walmart stores in 25 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. As of September 6, 2024, the recall now includes products sold at various retailers, such as Aldi, Walgreens, Market Basket, and BJ’s, totaling 133,500 cases in the latest count.
Affected products include:
- Walmart: Great Value brand in both 8-ounce (sold in six-packs) and 96-ounce plastic bottles.
- Aldi: Nature’s Nectar 100% Apple Juice, 64-ounce bottles.
- Walgreens: Nice! 100% Apple Juice, 64-ounce bottles.
- BJ’s: Wellsley Farms 100% Apple Juice, 96-ounce bottles.
These products were distributed in several states, with Walmart reporting that they have removed the affected items from their shelves and are collaborating with the supplier to investigate the issue.
Understanding Inorganic Arsenic
Arsenic is a naturally occurring element that can be found in soil, water, and food. There are two forms: organic and inorganic, with the latter being significantly more toxic. The FDA notes that while food may contain trace amounts, elevated levels of inorganic arsenic can lead to various health problems, including potential impacts on cognitive development in children.
Short-term exposure can lead to symptoms such as:
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- Numbness
- Muscle cramping
The FDA clarified that the levels detected in the recalled apple juice are not expected to cause serious health consequences but pose risks that warrant immediate action.
Previous Recalls and Ongoing Issues
This isn’t the first time concerns about arsenic in apple juice have surfaced. In May 2024, S. Martinelli & Company issued a recall of their Martinelli’s Gold Medal Apple Juice due to similar arsenic level concerns. The persistent reoccurrence of these issues highlights ongoing challenges with food safety regarding heavy metal contamination in fruit juices and other products.
Advice for Consumers
Consumers who may have purchased these products are advised to check their supplies against the recall list. Returning the items to the store for a full refund or discarding them immediately is the recommended course of action. Retailers have taken steps to inform the public and ensure the safety of their customers.
Aldi’s spokesperson stated, “If customers have products affected by this recall, they are advised to discard it immediately or return it to their local store for a full refund.” This approach reinforces the commitment of retailers to prioritize consumer safety.

Monitoring Future Developments
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as further investigations are conducted into the source of the contamination. Consumers are encouraged to stay informed by regularly checking FDA updates and recall notices, as well as staying vigilant about product safety in their purchases.
