Consumers are being urged to check their pantry as a nationwide recall of apple juice products has expanded to include several brand names sold at major retailers. The recall, initially announced last month due to arsenic concerns, now encompasses over 141,000 additional cases manufactured by Refresco Beverages US Inc.
Details of the Recall
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that certain apple juice products were found to contain levels of inorganic arsenic that exceed the agency’s recommended limits. Although the presence of arsenic can potentially cause adverse health effects, the FDA stated that the levels in the recalled products are not expected to lead to serious or irreversible medical issues.

The contaminated apple juice was distributed across a vast region, impacting consumers in 26 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.
Health Concerns Related to Arsenic
The FDA has classified inorganic arsenic as a more toxic variant of the mineral, with potential long-term effects associated with exposure including skin disorders, various cancers, and cardiovascular diseases. The agency emphasizes that while very low levels of inorganic and organic arsenic are common in food products, the levels found in these juices are still a point of concern.
Symptoms that can arise from short-term exposure to inorganic arsenic may include:

- Diarrhea
- Numbness or burning sensations
- Muscle cramping

Both Walmart and Refresco Beverages have been proactive in addressing the concern. Walmart, which initially recalled nearly 10,000 cases of Great Value apple juice last month, confirmed that it is removing the affected products from its shelves and collaborating with the supplier to investigate the issue further. Refresco Beverages, the manufacturer, underscores the importance of consumer safety, stating their commitment to preventing potential health risks.
