Every fall, the University of North Dakota (UND) buzzes with energy as it celebrates its annual Homecoming Week—a cherished tradition that dates back to 1916. This week-long event invites students, faculty, alumni, and the Grand Forks community to reconnect and enjoy an array of engaging activities. This year’s festivities span from September 23 to September 28, promising excitement and camaraderie for all involved.
Kickoff with Community Spirit
The first event of the week was a blood drive held on September 24 at the Wellness Center. This initiative allowed community members to come together in a meaningful way, promoting the spirit of giving back. Those unable to donate blood had the chance to volunteer, showcasing the commitment of the UND community to support one another.
Exciting Pep Rally
The highlight of the week was the traditional Homecoming Pep Rally on the evening of September 25. Taking place at the Grand Forks Town Square, the festivities kicked off at 5 p.m. with a variety of food trucks, offering delicious options for everyone. The official program began at 6:15 p.m., featuring speeches from notable figures such as UND President Andrew Armacost and the beloved football coach, Bubba Schweigert.
Entertainment was plentiful with performances from the UND Pride of the North marching band and the enthusiastic UND Cheerleading squad. After the program, attendees were encouraged to linger, enjoying food, games, and a chance to win one of two major giveaways. The atmosphere radiated excitement, bringing together individuals of all ages for a night of fun.
A Week of Connection and Celebration
The upcoming Friday, September 27, is set to be action-packed, featuring various events to honor distinguished alumni, faculty, and Hall of Fame members. Several departments also opened their doors for tours, promoting a welcoming environment that encourages alumni to reconnect with their past.
Homecoming Parade and Tailgating
The excitement reaches its peak on Saturday, September 28, with the annual Homecoming Parade scheduled at 9 a.m. This parade is not just an entertaining spectacle; it is a community gathering that supports local organizations and businesses, fostering pride and excitement ahead of the major football game. Following the parade, many attendees flock to the Alerus Center parking lot to partake in tailgating, a tradition that enhances the camaraderie as fans gear up for the day’s big event.
At 1 p.m., the culmination of Homecoming Week will occur with the thrilling football matchup between UND Football and Murray State. This game serves as a central reminder of the week’s purpose: to celebrate and reconnect the community with one another. It’s a long-standing tradition that underscores the importance of Homecoming, marking not just a game but a celebration of community spirit and pride.
