Residents of Sussex and Surrey are bracing for heavy rain this weekend, as the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning. The warning signals potential disruptions, including power cuts and possible travel chaos.
Details of the Weather Warning
The rain warning takes effect from 4 PM BST on Sunday and will continue until 9 AM on Monday. The Met Office declared that East Sussex, West Sussex, and parts of southern Surrey will be primarily affected.
According to a spokesperson for the Met Office, “Much of the warning area is likely to see 20mm to 30mm of rainfall over nine to 12 hours. However, some locales could receive between 50mm and 80mm.” This significant rainfall follows a period where some sections of southern and central England have already experienced more than 250% of their average September rainfall.
Wind and Travel Disruptions
Alongside the heavy rain, gusts of 50 mph to 55 mph are expected within the affected regions, with the potential for gusts up to 60 mph in exposed coastal regions and higher ground. This could result in:
- Flooding in homes and businesses
- Interruption to power supplies and services
- Disruptions to bus and train services
“After further rain on Monday, which could extend into Tuesday in some eastern and southeastern areas, it should become somewhat drier and brighter more widely around midweek,” the Met Office spokesperson added.
Current Flood Alerts
<pIn addition to the rain warning, the Environment Agency has issued four flood alerts in response to the recent intense rainfall. Areas like Crowhurst are particularly vulnerable, with flooding affecting fields, roads, and local gardens. The Powdermill Stream has already peaked, causing concerns for residents.
Minimal flooding impacts are also expected at Bexhill Road recreation ground, while the Combe Haven River is forecasted to return to normal levels by this evening. Notably, the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (Torro) previously warned that Sussex might experience brief tornadoes, hail, and gusty winds up to 50 mph, although those storms did not materialize.
Farmers Facing Challenges
This warning comes at a difficult time for farmers in Sussex, who have already faced challenges this harvest season. Many farmers are expressing concerns about crop yields and other impacts from the sustained rain.
If you are in the Sussex and Surrey area, it is essential to stay informed and prepare for possible disruptions. Follow local news outlets like BBC Surrey for updates, or reach out with any storm stories you wish to share.
Looking Forward
Weather patterns suggest a brief improvement midweek, but the Met Office has indicated possible further wet and windy conditions towards the end of next week. As many residents aim to stay safe and dry, being prepared and vigilant will be vital in the days ahead.
To avoid being caught off guard, consider checking weather reports frequently and prepare for potential flooding or travel disruptions. Ensure your homes are secure, and be mindful of local traffic updates, especially if you need to travel during the warning period.
Stay safe, and let’s wish for better weather soon!
