In a significant move, BYD, one of the world’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, is recalling almost 97,000 of its popular Dolphin and Yuan Plus models. This recall stems from potential fire risks linked to a manufacturing fault in the steering control units of these vehicles. According to the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) in China, the recall will affect vehicles manufactured between November 2022 and December 2023. Specifically, the affected vehicles include:
- 87,762 Dolphin and Yuan Plus vehicles produced from February 4 to December 26, 2023.
- 8,952 Yuan Plus vehicles made between November 2, 2022, and June 19, 2023.
The issue arises from the Column-Assist Electric Power Steering (CEPS) controller, where certain capacitors may develop microcracks during the manufacturing process. These cracks could lead to overheating and a potential fire when the vehicle is in use.
BYD’s Response and Safety Measures
To mitigate this risk, BYD is taking prompt action by instructing authorized dealers to retrofit the affected vehicles. They will replace the faulty components with upgraded controller insulation gaskets at no cost to the customers. This proactive measure aims to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers alike.
