A Shocking Incident
This year’s festivities were shaken by a tragic event. Just before the reveal of the competition’s bracket, Bear 402, a beloved former contestant, was killed by a male bear, Bear 469. The encounter was captured on video, leading to a delay in the bracket’s announcement. According to Mike Fritz, a naturalist at Explore.org, it appeared that Bear 469 drowned Bear 402. The reasons behind the altercation remain unclear.
In light of this event, Matt Johnson from the National Park Service stated, “National parks like Katmai protect not only the wonders of nature but also the harsh realities.” He emphasized that these bears are always competing for survival.
The Contestants
Despite the earlier disruption, enthusiasm for Fat Bear Week remains high. The final bracket features 11 enormous grizzly bears ready to vie for the title. The bears will go head to head in a bracket reminiscent of sports tournaments, with viewers voting on their favorites.
