In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Johnson reflected on the harrowing years he spent in Hollywood as a struggling actor, grappling with financial instability and his quest for success.
Struggles of a Young Actor
Johnson’s journey began in Flat Creek, Missouri, where he faced numerous challenges during his formative years. His father, a failed farmer, moved the family to Kansas in search of better opportunities. He eventually found work at Boeing, while Johnson’s mother made ends meet as a beautician. Reflecting on his audition, Johnson remarked, “I couldn’t believe somebody had seemingly been jotting down my thoughts, feelings and emotions. The part was meant for me.” Although the initial excitement was met with delays in production, a later call for an independent film, *Cease Fire*, positioned him perfectly for the opportunity he had been waiting for.
Rise to Fame with *Miami Vice*
When Johnson landed the role on *Miami Vice*, his career trajectory dramatically changed. He describes slipping into the character as if it were second nature, bringing his years of struggle to bear on his performance. “For the first year and a half, I was like, ‘I’m just going to stay focused here,’” Johnson recalled. “I’d put in some pretty good struggles. I didn’t want it to all of a sudden – poof.”
As the show gained immense popularity, Johnson’s efforts began to materialize. His breakthrough role not only launched him into stardom but also earned him critical acclaim, culminating in an Emmy nomination during the second season of the show.
