Mumbai is set to unveil its first T-shaped flyover at Mith Chowky, a much-anticipated infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion in one of the city’s busiest areas. The flyover will officially open for public use on October 6, specifically for two-wheelers and light vehicles, marking a significant step toward improving mobility in Malad.
A New Solution to Traffic Woes
For years, traffic at Mith Chowky has been a challenge, with heavy congestion affecting daily commuters. The newly constructed 800-meter flyover, which cost approximately ₹55 crores, is designed to alleviate this problem. It connects the Marve road to the Western Express Highway (WEH), allowing motorists to bypass some of the most congested areas.
The flyover consists of two arms. The east-west arm will open first, while the southern arm, which will connect to Goregaon, is expected to be operational by the end of December. This strategic road network is particularly vital for commuters traveling between Kandivali, Andheri, and Versova. However, buses and heavy vehicles will still be required to use the lower road due to the overhead Metro 2-A line that restricts height.
Construction Details
Construction of the flyover began on April 11, 2022, as part of efforts to ease the notorious bottleneck at Mith Chowky. The flyover will provide:
- A direct route for light vehicles to the Malad Station and WEH.
- Improved access for southbound traffic heading toward Infinity Mall, Andheri, Juhu, and Bandra.
- An overall reduction in waiting times at this pivotal junction.
The lane leading from Marve to the WEH measures 390 meters long and 8 meters wide. Officials expect an immediate improvement in traffic flow once it opens.
Inauguration and Community Impact
The inauguration will be conducted by Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, who will also unveil a newly constructed municipal school building in Malvani. This school has been a critical investment for the community, rebuilt at a cost of ₹56.72 crores to accommodate over 2,800 students.
Originally established in 1966, the school underwent reconstruction after being demolished in 2020. It now boasts six floors and 104 classrooms, significantly enhancing educational facilities in the area.
Safety Concerns Addressed
Despite the excitement surrounding the opening of the flyover, it faced scrutiny earlier this year. A viral video in August showcased the flyover ending abruptly at the metro line, raising concerns about safety and accessibility. Authorities later reassured the public that the design includes a 3.5-meter clearance after the installation of girders, ensuring that the bridge is safe for commuter use.
