For Rebel Ridge, having Terry and Michael share that simple, yet profound connection through a fist bump perfectly encapsulates their bond and the emotional stakes at play. When you’re grappling with a world that constantly tries to tear people apart—like systemic issues of corruption and racial profiling—the moments of connection become not just cathartic but utterly essential.
As far as the tone of the film goes, I strived for a balance that acknowledges the harsh realities without becoming mired in despair. My constant aim was to depict the strength of individuals like Terry—not just in physical prowess, but in resilience and determination. By aligning him with Summer, whose legal knowledge complements his street smarts, we crafted a more nuanced approach to tackling injustice. Additionally, the shooting style reflects my desire to create an immersive experience. The tracking shots and close-quarters camerawork are meant to bring you closer to the action without overwhelming you. While making Rebel Ridge, I learned that every challenge and mistake can show us how films can spark important conversations.
