The International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) has returned to Chicago’s McCormick Place, showcasing advancements in various manufacturing technologies, particularly emphasizing 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM). Among the exhibitors, Markforged highlighted its new metal 3D printer, the FX10, capable of fabricating parts in stainless steel and carbon-fiber-infused nylon. Markforged’s CEO, Shai Terem, indicated that the FX10 is designed to replace approximately 10% of metal parts typically machined. This positions 3D printing as a viable and efficient alternative for manufacturers looking to integrate innovative technologies into their operations.
The focus on 3D printing at IMTS underscores a shift towards making this technology relevant for production volumes of end-use parts. The presence of around 80 exhibitors in the Additive Manufacturing Sector illustrates a concerted effort to demonstrate the capabilities and reliability of 3D printing technologies in industrial applications. Companies like Markforged are not just showcasing the technology but also proving its reliability and economic advantages for functional parts.
The concept of digital sheet forming, introduced by companies like Desktop Metal, represents another innovation in manufacturing technology. It eliminates the need for traditional stamping tools and dies, which can be costly and time-consuming. Instead, this method allows direct translation from CAD designs to part shaping, significantly reducing lead times and operational costs for low to medium production runs.
Additionally, discussions surrounding the integration of AI and advanced software technologies were prevalent at the IMTS. The evolving landscape of manufacturing emphasizes a digital approach to production, leveraging real-time data and automation to enhance efficiency and product quality.
IMTS is an important event that shows how 3D printing and digital manufacturing can change the way things are made. Companies like Markforged are at the front, helping to shape the future of manufacturing.
