As the political landscape in Nigeria evolves, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is gearing up for a comeback in Benue State by 2027. The party’s recent state congress in Makurdi showed strong support among its members, highlighting a renewed spirit that could challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
A New Leadership for the PDP
The PDP has elected new state executives, with Chief Ezekiel Adaji taking over as chairman. This decision marks a significant shift after challenges within the party. During the congress, Adaji emphasized his commitment to unite party members and restore the PDP’s prominence in Benue.
- Other key appointments include:
– Azua Ashongo as Deputy Chairman
– Daniel Nyikwagh as Secretary
– Tim Nyor as Publicity Secretary
– Ibya Terkimbil as Youth Leader
– Mrs. Alice Albert as Women Leader
According to Alh. Ibrahim Shaba, leader of the Benue State PDP Congress Electoral Committee, out of 2,910 delegates, 2,900 were accredited for the elections, a turnout that reflects the party’s strength and engagement.
The Path Forward
During his acceptance speech, Adaji expressed immense gratitude for the overwhelming support from party members. He stated, “Our state is in need of leadership, and my state EXCO will not disappoint the party to ensure it bounces back to power.” Adaji plans to form a reconciliation committee to address any unresolved issues among members, aiming for a united front as the elections approach.
Former Benue Governor Samuel Ortom voiced optimism about the PDP’s future. He noted the high enthusiasm at the congress as a signal of PDP’s momentum, asserting that the party is poised to dislodge the APC from power in the upcoming elections. Ortom urged members to band together to achieve their goal.
Background Context
The PDP in Benue has faced challenges in recent years, including internal disputes and stronger opposition from the APC. The caretaker committee chairman, Senator Napoleon Bali, also reinforced the message of unity and strength by stating through his representative that the PDP is gaining traction within the state.
Dr. Laha Dzever, representing the Benue North West Senatorial District, echoed the sentiments of forward movement. He assured loyalists that the PDP would strive to regain its foothold in the state. Meanwhile, Mr. Matthew Ire, representing Benue South, remarked that there was no other viable party in the area, suggesting the PDP’s entrenched presence.
Looking Ahead to 2027
With the elections still a few years away, the newly elected committee faces the immediate task of consolidating power within the party. They must ensure that all voices are heard and that any rifts among members are healed.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the congress was seen as vibrant and full of life. This strong turnout and participation signify that the PDP’s base is motivated and ready for a challenge.
The PDP has new leaders, like Adaji, and lots of support from its members, which gives them a strong start for their campaign in 2027. They are working hard to build energy and fix any disagreements among themselves. The party wants to make big changes in Benue politics and change how power works in the area. With everyone working together and aiming for the same goals, the PDP hopes to become a major player in Benue State again.
