BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Bowling Green State University (BGSU) has announced that senior Ryan Lothamer is the only recipient in Ohio of the prestigious Voyager Scholarship for Public Service. This scholarship is awarded to students nationwide who exhibit a passion for public service and leadership. Lothamer’s selection marks the third consecutive year a BGSU student has earned this distinction, underscoring the university’s commitment to fostering future leaders in public service.
A Legacy of Leadership: The Voyager Scholarship
The Voyager Scholarship was established by former President Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama, and Brian Chesky, the co-founder and CEO of Airbnb. It aims to support students who are dedicated to careers in public service. This program provides recipients with up to $50,000 in financial aid, summer work-travel experiences, and additional professional development opportunities, including a $2,000 Airbnb credit each year for ten years.
Since its inception in 2022, the program has awarded scholarships to 100 college juniors annually. BGSU has proudly maintained a consistent track record, being the only university in Ohio to have a student represented in each cohort.

Those opportunities to get involved, give back and take on leadership roles led to me becoming a Voyager,” he stated.

Similar to Lothamer’s inspiring story, William Navarette Moreno, a junior at the University of Colorado Denver, was also recognized as a 2024 Voyager Scholarship recipient. Moreno, who hails from Colorado Springs, expressed his astonishment and gratitude upon receiving the news of his scholarship award. He had applied with the hope of enhancing his education in public health and making a meaningful impact in his community.
