BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Bowling Green State University (BGSU) has announced that senior Ryan Lothamer is the only recipient in Ohio of the prestigious Voyager Scholarship for Public Service. This scholarship is awarded to students nationwide who exhibit a passion for public service and leadership. Lothamer’s selection marks the third consecutive year a BGSU student has earned this distinction, underscoring the university’s commitment to fostering future leaders in public service.

A Legacy of Leadership: The Voyager Scholarship

The Voyager Scholarship was established by former President Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama, and Brian Chesky, the co-founder and CEO of Airbnb. It aims to support students who are dedicated to careers in public service. This program provides recipients with up to $50,000 in financial aid, summer work-travel experiences, and additional professional development opportunities, including a $2,000 Airbnb credit each year for ten years.

Since its inception in 2022, the program has awarded scholarships to 100 college juniors annually. BGSU has proudly maintained a consistent track record, being the only university in Ohio to have a student represented in each cohort.

Ryan Lothamer: A Commitment to Science Education

Ryan Lothamer, a science education major from Defiance, Ohio, has made significant contributions to BGSU and his community. During his time at the university, he developed a program aimed at extending science education to underserved communities. The initiative, a 10-week immersive program, has garnered interest from several Ohio school districts. Through this work, Lothamer’s commitment to improving science education opportunities reflects the core values that the Voyager Scholarship seeks to promote.

In addition to his academic achievements, Lothamer has participated in various extracurricular activities, including the university’s therapy dog team. He has volunteered with organizations like the American Red Cross and the Ronald McDonald House, showcasing his dedication to giving back to the community. Additionally, Lothamer initiated a radio show that further demonstrates his leadership and creative endeavors during his college experience.

Reflecting on his journey, Lothamer remarked on the transformative role BGSU has played in his life. “After transferring to BGSU from a community college, I began making up for lost time. I found myself getting involved in everything. All those opportunities stem from BGSU taking a chance on me. Those opportunities to get involved, give back and take on leadership roles led to me becoming a Voyager,” he stated.

A National Recognition: Another Successful Recipient

Similar to Lothamer’s inspiring story, William Navarette Moreno, a junior at the University of Colorado Denver, was also recognized as a 2024 Voyager Scholarship recipient. Moreno, who hails from Colorado Springs, expressed his astonishment and gratitude upon receiving the news of his scholarship award. He had applied with the hope of enhancing his education in public health and making a meaningful impact in his community.

The Voyager Scholarship has not only provided Moreno with substantial financial support—covering tuition and providing resources for summer work-travel experiences—but it has also connected him with a network of leaders and mentors dedicated to public service. The educational benefits offer a unique opportunity for students like Lothamer and Moreno to further their commitment to community engagement and social equity, especially in fields like public health.

Beyond Financial Aid: Comprehensive Support and Development

The Voyager Scholarship goes beyond just financial assistance. Recipients receive tailored programming and opportunities to pursue leadership training, networking, and professional development. This aspect of the scholarship aims to create a dynamic community of young leaders who are prepared to tackle pressing social issues.

  • Financial Aid: Each Voyager Scholar can receive up to $50,000 over two years.
  • Work-Travel Stipend: Scholars receive a stipend of $10,000 for summer work-travel experiences between their junior and senior years.
  • Ten-Year Benefits: Recipients enjoy an Airbnb credit of $2,000 each year for a decade, supporting continued travel and exploration of community service projects.
  • Leadership Development: The program includes access to summits and speaker series featuring various leaders and mentors in public service.

A Bright Future Ahead

As they embark on their journeys toward impactful careers, both Lothamer and Moreno exemplify the spirit of the Voyager Scholarship by demonstrating a commitment to public service. Lothamer is now equipped to continue his efforts to expand science education access, while Moreno focuses on health equity through his nonprofit initiative, TheCHANGEproject, which addresses systemic inequities in healthcare.

With these scholarships, both students are empowered to not only achieve their educational goals but also to contribute positively to their respective communities. Through programs like the Voyager Scholarship, universities across the nation can nurture and support the next generation of passionate leaders dedicated to making a difference in society.

BGSU is known for helping its students win important scholarships, like the Voyager Scholarship. This shows how the university helps shape students who care about their communities and the world. As these scholars move forward in their studies and careers, they become role models for future students.
