California State Senator Faces Lawsuit for Alleged Sexual Harassment
A scandal is unfolding in California politics as State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil is accused of forcing her chief of staff to engage in a “sex-based quid pro quo relationship,” resulting in bodily injuries. The civil lawsuit was filed in Sacramento Superior Court on Thursday by Chad Condit, her now-former chief of staff.
Allegations of Abuse of Power
Condit, who is married, has alleged that Alvarado-Gil, who recently switched political allegiance from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party, was an “erratic” and “controlling” boss. According to the lawsuit, Condit claims that Alvarado-Gil imposed a “sexually dominating abuse of authority and power.” The suit states that this relationship was characterized by unwelcome advances and sexual behavior, coupled with punitive repercussions should Condit resist.

In particular, Condit highlights a traumatic incident during their final encounter, alleging that Alvarado-Gil forced him to perform oral sex in a car seat. The lawsuit claims that this forced position resulted in three herniated discs in Condit’s back and a collapsed hip due to the necessity of twisting and contorting his body in a confined space.
Condit asserts that he later cited his injuries to refuse further advances from Alvarado-Gil, which purportedly provoked her anger and subsequent threats regarding his job security. The suit alleges that, in retaliation, Alvarado-Gil issued him a disciplinary letter accusing him of inappropriate behavior. Condit’s employment was terminated in December after he made it clear that he would not comply with Alvarado-Gil’s demands.
Legal Responses from Alvarado-Gil’s Team
In response to the allegations, Alvarado-Gil’s attorney, Ognian Gavrilov, called the accusations baseless. He characterized Condit’s claims as the fabrications of a disgruntled employee seeking financial gain, asserting that the senator will be vindicated in court. “We expect that the Senator will be fully cleared of any wrongdoing of these bogus, financially motivated claims,” Gavrilov stated.

The California State Senate is also named in the lawsuit but has not yet been served. Senate Secretary Erika Contreras indicated that they are discussing the matter with counsel to determine appropriate next steps. She emphasized the Senate’s commitment to taking all complaints seriously but noted that they are unable to comment on ongoing litigation.
Senator Alvarado-Gil’s press secretary, Jacqui Nguyen, reiterated the senator’s cooperation with the ongoing judicial process. “This is a lawsuit regarding a former employee, so we need to allow the judicial process to go through its course,” Nguyen said, urging all inquiries to be directed to the Senate Rules Committee.
