As of August 30, 2024, the FDA reported 158 cases of illness across 32 states, with 63 individuals hospitalized and two possible fatalities associated with the consumption of these products.

Further analysis indicated that the Dark Chocolate Bar also contained other psychoactive substances – desmethoxyyangonin, dihydrokavain, and kavain. These compounds, which are generally found in kava, can affect the central nervous system and may lead to dizziness, loss of coordination, and sedation. Concerns about kava’s safety mechanism arose after studies suggested potential liver toxicity and carcinogenicity.
Additionally, other psychoactive substances, including ibotenic acid and muscimol, were detected in raw ingredients associated with the production of Diamond Shruumz products. Alarmingly, the FDA found pregabalin, a prescription medication, in several samples of chocolate bars and infused cones.
