Fidelity Investments Launches Financial Literacy Initiative for Young Canadians

TORONTO, Sept. 10, 2024 — In a bid to address the growing demand for financial education among youth, Fidelity Investments Canada ULC has launched new educational resources as part of its Money Gains video series. This initiative aligns with findings from the Fidelity Young Canadians Study, which revealed that 78% of Canadian teenagers aged 15 to 17 believe it is crucial to learn about budgeting and money management.

New Video Content for Investment Education

The Money Gains video series, first introduced in 2023, aims to equip high school students, particularly those in grades 9 and 10, with foundational knowledge of investing. The latest content rollout features two new videos that focus on essential topics: the differences between seeking advice and self-investing as well as understanding investment fees.

  • Target Audience: While primarily designed for students, these videos are also valuable resources for parents and educators who wish to support young people’s financial education.
  • Availability: The series can be accessed for free in both English and French through Fidelity’s website and YouTube channel.

Lesson Plans for Educators

As part of its commitment to enhancing financial literacy, Fidelity is also providing comprehensive lesson plans tailored for Ontario educators. These resources integrate seamlessly with subjects such as:

  • Building the Entrepreneurial Mindset (BEM1O)
  • Launching and Leading a Business (BEP2O)
  • Grade 9 Mathematics (MTH1W)
  • Career Studies (GLC2O)

The lesson plans, available in both English and French, offer a structured approach for teachers to introduce students to investment concepts.

Supporting the Next Generation of Investors

Diana Godfrey, Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Corporate Affairs at Fidelity, emphasized the importance of providing credible investment information. “Learning to invest wisely is a foundational skill for our young people,” she stated. “Our goal with Money Gains is to give teens the tools to make informed financial decisions.”

Kelly Creelman, Senior Vice President of Products and Marketing, remarked on the challenges faced by young investors. “The world of investing is exciting but can also be daunting,” she said. “Money Gains starts with the basics so teens can gain confidence in their investing knowledge.”

Alignment with Ontario’s Financial Literacy Initiative

Fidelity’s launch of the Money Gains video series comes at a critical time as the Ontario government has announced a new requirement for financial literacy in Grade 10. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the need for financial education in schools, and Fidelity seeks to be a proactive partner in this important endeavor.

Fidelity’s Broader Commitment to Financial Literacy

The Money Gains project is just one aspect of Fidelity’s comprehensive efforts to enhance financial education. Through its Charitable Giving Committee, Fidelity supports various educational charities, including Pathways to Education and the Toronto Public Library, to help individuals gain the knowledge and tools necessary for financial success.

Upcoming Special Episode on Investment Literacy

To further engage young audiences in financial literacy, Fidelity is hosting a special episode of “The Upside” on September 10 at 12:30 p.m. ET. This episode will feature insights from personal finance expert Robin Taub and Fidelity Learning Design Consultant Ravina Gill, discussing the critical topics that resonate with young investors today.

As Fidelity Investments continues its mission to empower Canadians through education, the Money Gains initiative stands as a significant step toward fostering a financially literate and investment-savvy generation.
