As Hong Kong prepares for a bustling National Day celebration, an influx of mainland visitors is set to enhance the city’s festive spirit. This marks an increase from approximately 1.1 million visitors last year, showcasing a growing interest from travelers across the border.
- Increased Inbound Tour Groups: The council predicts a 10% rise in inbound tour groups, estimating around 850 groups will arrive during this period.
- Peak Cruise Season: As the golden week unfolds, the city also enters its peak cruise season. The Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau forecasts a remarkable 50% growth in non-local passengers compared to last year.
However, not all sectors may benefit from this surge in tourism. Representatives from the catering industry have expressed concerns about a potential outflow of local residents, which might limit the economic gains for local businesses.
Celebrating National Day with Spectacular Fireworks
October 1 will see a grand celebration with a fireworks display themed “The Great Fireworks Dazzling the National Day.” This year’s show is expected to be particularly impressive, featuring:
- Duration: The fireworks will last for 23 minutes.
- Fireworks Count: A staggering 31,888 fireworks will illuminate the skies over Victoria Harbour.
- New Drone Performance: For the first time, the festivities will include a drone light show, which will present images of pandas and the number “75.”
The display aims to honor both the national milestone and Hong Kong’s unique identity.

The fireworks will be launched from nine different points, including three barges and six small pontoons. Spectators can enjoy the view from popular areas such as Tsim Sha Tsui, Mid-Levels, and Causeway Bay. The sequence of fireworks is designed to tell a story, beginning with a “red star,” transitioning to “green bamboo leaves” to celebrate the recently donated giant pandas to Hong Kong, and culminating in a stunning finale of red and purple fireworks representing both China and Hong Kong.
