As it approaches its 50th anniversary, the Lumary City-Bay Fun Run is set to attract thousands of participants this weekend. The iconic event, which runs from the heart of Adelaide to the picturesque Glenelg beach, has become a celebrated community tradition since its inception.

A Rich History of the City-Bay Fun Run

The City-Bay Fun Run was created by Tony Heard, an advertising executive who initially had no background in running. Heard, who has participated in 49 events, was inspired to take up jogging later in life. His story reflects a larger commentary on physical activity and well-being, as recounted by filmmaker Johnny Taranto in an interview. Taranto noted that many told Heard that jogging was a waste of valuable heartbeats. Undeterred, Heard went on to design an event that would encourage both running and walking among people of all ages and activity levels.

From modest beginnings, the City-Bay Fun Run has transformed into a major annual event, drawing on average around 26,000 participants. Its popularity has established it as one of South Australia’s key health and fitness activities.

Event Details for 2024

This year’s fun run will take place on Sunday, September 17, 2024. Participants will embark on a 12-kilometre route starting from King William Street in Adelaide, continuing through various neighborhoods before concluding at the scenic coastal destination of Glenelg. Aside from the main event, there are also options for shorter and longer distances, catering to all levels of fitness.

Post-Race Festivities

Following the run, festivities at Colley Reserve will include food and coffee stalls, local business showcases, and charity events. This annual celebration not only highlights athletic achievement but also fosters community spirit and support for local initiatives.

Related Activities in Adelaide

In addition to the City-Bay Fun Run, other events will be taking place in Adelaide over the weekend. At SkyCity, a four-course progressive dinner will be available, allowing guests to enjoy unique culinary experiences across various award-winning restaurants. Each course will feature specialty dishes paired with drinks, highlighting the diverse dining culture of the region.

For wine enthusiasts, the Grenache and Gourmet Festival in McLaren Vale is set to commence, celebrating the premium wines from this renowned area. Participants can enjoy exclusive tastings, gourmet food pairings, and masterclasses throughout the two-week event, which starts on September 20.

Cultural Highlights

The Korean Film Festival will also showcase films this weekend, with the Regal Theatre hosting screenings on Friday. Concluding the festival is “Dog Days,” followed by the indie drama “Picnic,” providing a platform for diverse storytelling from Korea.

Additionally, families looking for a day of fun can attend the Barossa Spring Fair. This event, designed to be pet-friendly, will include games, food trucks, and musical performances, creating an inviting atmosphere for visitors of all ages.

Art and Literature Events

Art enthusiasts can visit the State Library on Sunday for the 2024 Kennedy Prize exhibition. This year, Spanish-Australian artist Amaya Iturri was awarded the $25,000 prize for her work titled “The Beauty of Now,” which reflects themes of aging and wisdom.

The exhibition remains open until September 22, allowing the public to appreciate contemporary art while celebrating the transformative power of creativity.

The City-Bay Fun Run is getting ready for an important celebration! It shows how much our community cares about staying active and coming together. Everyone, whether you’re running or cheering from the sidelines, is welcome to join in this fun tradition that brings people of all ages together.
