Australian teenager Christian Mansell is making waves in the world of motorsport as he gears up for his Formula 2 debut in Azerbaijan this weekend, where he qualified in an impressive 10th position, translating to pole for the Sprint race. The 19-year-old’s entry into the F1 feeder series marks a significant milestone in his racing career, transitioning after two successful seasons in Formula 3.
Mansell’s Performance in Qualifying
Mansell’s debut qualifying session was nothing short of eventful. Initially, he struggled as the slippery circuit challenged all drivers, with Isack Hadjar setting an early benchmark at 1:57.423s. Richard Verschoor later took the lead with a time of 1:56.023s, pushing the competition further. Mansell found himself in 15th place after his first timed lap, clocking a 1:58.258s. Unfortunately, this time was deleted due to a yellow flag infringement triggered by fellow racer Dennis Hauger.
Despite the setback, Mansell persevered and improved his performance in the 30-minute session. He climbed to 10th with a new best lap of 1:56.788s, placing him in a promising position for the Sprint race due to the reverse top 10 format used in Formula 2.
Following his strong finish, the session took a dramatic turn when the red flag was thrown after both Campos cars went off track at Turn 1. With just over four minutes remaining, the red flag disrupted the final qualifying runs, but Mansell was able to complete his lap just in time, finalizing his position in tenth place.
Race Schedule
The Formula 2 Sprint race will take place on Saturday, following the conclusion of the final Formula 1 practice session in Azerbaijan, starting at 14:15 local time (20:15 AEST).
Mansell’s Transition to Formula 2
Stepping up to Formula 2 is seen as Mansell’s “biggest challenge to date.” He aims to build on the experience he gained in Formula 3, where he secured seven podium finishes, including four seconds and three thirds. Mansell expressed his determination to approach the F2 weekend with a focus on maximizing his performance.
“My philosophy is to just go out there and deliver the absolute maximum of myself in the car,” Mansell stated. He emphasized the importance of treating each session as a learning opportunity to hone his skills, stating, “I think that’s probably the best approach you can have.”
Plans for Future Races
Mansell is set to race with Trident for the final three events of the 2024 Formula 2 season. This debut is seen as a crucial opportunity for him to familiarize himself with the demands of the series ahead of a full-time role next season.
The decision for Mansell to fill the seat was made possible by Roman Stanek’s choice to step back from competition after struggling for performance in the series. This change was finalized during the Italian Grand Prix weekend when Mansell finished third in a dramatic Feature race.
Mansell acknowledged the eclectic mix of excitement and nerves he felt upon learning he would be racing in Baku. “About an hour and a half after the Feature race, I was told that I was going to be driving in Baku for Trident,” he shared.
Adapting to New Challenges
As Mansell prepares for his first full F2 race weekend, he recognizes the substantial differences between the Formula 3 and Formula 2 cars. His experience in the lower category has equipped him with valuable skills, but he anticipates a learning curve as he adapts to the new machinery.
“There are certain things that are going to be very foreign for me this weekend,” he explained. “I need to know every single procedure; what the steering wheel does, how the car reacts if I hold the brake into the corner, or if I go really aggressive on the throttle.”
Mansell aims to make the operational aspects of racing second nature, allowing him to focus solely on driving come race time. “Once you can do that, the driving becomes a million times easier,” he stated confidently.

With the Formula 2 grid packed with experienced competitors and young talent, Mansell’s ability to perform under pressure will be scrutinized. He joins a cohort of impressive drivers, including Richard Verschoor, who secured pole position for Sunday’s Feature race.
