Actor Kirk Cameron is advocating for a shift in how children access literature, citing a pressing concern regarding the content of books marketed to young readers. During a recent episode of his “American Campfire Revival” podcast, Cameron expressed his worries about the perceived shift in the themes of children’s literature, particularly those published by Scholastic Books.
Concerns Over Children’s Literature
Cameron characterized the current landscape of children’s books as being overwhelmed by materials that he believes convey immoral messages. He specifically pointed out that Scholastic Books, a long-standing staple in education and childhood reading, has undergone a transformation that he finds troubling. “Times have changed, and the woke mind virus has thoroughly infected those who make the decisions at Scholastic,” Cameron asserted, arguing that children today are likely to encounter themes that do not align with traditional values, including topics like sexual identity and explicit content.
This concern, he suggests, has led many parents to feel powerless. “When parents are told about this, unfortunately, many are shrugging their shoulders…thinking, ‘Oh, well, there’s nothing we can do about this,’” he noted. Cameron emphasizes the need for alternatives that offer “wholesome content” that reflects the values parents want to impart to their children.
A New Alternative: Sky Tree Book Fairs
In response to these concerns, Sky Tree Book Fairs was established by a group of parents dedicated to providing a reliable source for children’s literature that aligns with their values. This initiative emerged from the inspiration taken from Cameron’s advocacy efforts during his public library story hour tour. “They recognized the need for a reliable and safe option for book distribution in schools,” the Sky Tree website states, highlighting the necessity for alternatives amid what some see as a monopoly on children’s book publishing and distribution by companies like Scholastic.
Cameron noted that the initiative has gained traction, with over a thousand schools reportedly canceling their contracts with Scholastic to partner with Sky Tree instead. “We’ve got to get off the couch, stop complaining and lamenting, and start creating and building the future and the world we want for our children to live in,” he implored, calling on parents and communities to take action.
A Call to Action for Parents and Communities
Cameron’s message to parents extends beyond merely switching book suppliers. He underscores the importance of creating alternatives that reflect positive values in all aspects of children’s lives—be it schools, libraries, or community events. He believes that engaging the community and empowering parents to take proactive measures can foster a more supportive environment for children’s moral education.
“We need to create alternatives for the bad things, create good alternatives for parents and churches and schools and libraries to latch onto,” Cameron stated. Cameron has taken his advocacy a step further by collaborating with Brave Books, focusing on publishing children’s literature that imparts moral lessons. The book titles he has worked on, including “The Fox, The Fair, and The Invention Scare” and “As You Grow,” are designed to provide tools for parents seeking to establish a strong moral foundation through literature. Cameron maintains that such resources are crucial for helping children cultivate their values in a rapidly changing cultural landscape.
“BRAVE Books are the perfect tool to do just that,” he said, reinforcing his commitment to positively influencing the resources available for young readers.

Cameron has framed his efforts within a larger conversation about cultural values, emphasizing the importance of community engagement. He advocates for a collective striving to restore societal norms that he believes align with family and faith-based principles. His upcoming book, “Born to Be Brave: How to Be a Part of America’s Spiritual Comeback,” aims to challenge individuals and families to participate in this cultural revival.
“I want an opportunity to partner together with you and with my kids and with your kids and grandkids to restore the culture,” Cameron expressed, urging his audience not to give up on the communities and values they hold dear.
