Russell Moore is stepping down as provost of the University of Colorado Boulder, marking the end of nearly 14 years in the position. Moore has been the longest-serving provost in CU Boulder’s history, as well as among its peer institutions in the Association of American Universities. His decision comes as Chancellor Justin Schwartz prepares to conduct a national search for Moore’s successor.

Leadership and Accomplishments

Moore announced his resignation, expressing pride in his tenure. “The timing of this move gives Chancellor Schwartz the opportunity to seek new academic leadership and shape the academic mission according to his goals for CU Boulder,” he stated. He also reflected positively on his achievements, which he said included assembling the most diverse academic affairs leadership team in the university’s history. Moore emphasized his commitment to fostering a culture of openness, compassion, and inclusivity throughout his time as provost.

Chancellor Schwartz commended Moore for his contributions, stating, “Russ Moore has led CU Boulder’s academic mission through a time of bold transition and redefinition.” Schwartz acknowledged the significance of Moore’s accomplishments and praised his methodical approach, highlighting his ability to listen and engage with the campus community.

Career Background

Moore was officially appointed provost on October 13, 2010, after serving as interim provost since July of the same year. His career at CU Boulder began in 1984 when he joined the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology, now known as Integrative Physiology. His previous roles included interim vice chancellor for research from May 2009 until June 2010, associate vice chancellor for research, and professor at various levels in his department. He also holds an adjunct professorship in cardiology at the University of Colorado Denver’s Anschutz Medical Campus.

Prior to his tenure at CU, Moore taught at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.

Search for Successor

The university plans to share details on the search for Moore’s replacement in the coming weeks. During this period of transition, he will continue to serve in his role to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities.

Incident at Folsom Field

In a separate incident involving the university, a man has been arrested following a series of hit-and-run accidents, culminating in damage to Folsom Field. The suspect, driving a blue pickup truck, reportedly struck several vehicles at approximately 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, narrowly avoiding pedestrians during his escape. Witnesses reported that the driver continued on, hitting trees and road signs before officers attempted to intervene.

Despite police efforts, the driver made his way to the football stadium, where he crashed through a gate and onto the field. He eventually surrendered after a brief standoff with university police. The damage included significant disruption to the grass field, specifically noted at the 40-yard-line.

University officials confirmed that the field will be ready for the Colorado Buffaloes’ next home game against Baylor on September 21. Steve Hurlbert from the athletics department indicated that the incident would not affect the upcoming game schedule.

Charges and Legal Implications

The 48-year-old man involved in the incident faces multiple charges, including criminal attempted vehicular assault and reckless endangerment. Authorities stated he was booked into jail for leaving the scene of multiple accidents, among other offenses. The estimated costs associated with the damage are reported to range from $100,000 to $150,000.

As CU Boulder goes through changes in leadership and deals with what happened at Folsom Field, the university is focused on keeping its academic standards high and making sure that students and the community feel safe.
