Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo testified before a House panel regarding his administration’s handling of COVID-19 nursing home policies, facing sharp criticisms from Republican lawmakers. During the hearing, Rep. Elise Stefanik emphasized that Cuomo was “culpable” for his actions and demanded he apologize to families who lost loved ones due to these policies. Stefanik pressed Cuomo to look at the grieving families in attendance and acknowledge responsibility.
Cuomo defended his administration, attributing blame to former President Donald Trump and suggesting that he followed federal guidelines regarding nursing home admissions. He claimed the decision regarding patient acceptance ultimately lay with the nursing homes. However, Stefanik and other lawmakers challenged his narrative, arguing that Cuomo’s advisory effectively forced nursing homes to accept COVID-positive patients.
The hearing showed that people have strong differences about who should be held responsible and how open things should be. Many are still looking for answers and justice for the losses they faced during the pandemic because of Cuomo’s decisions.
