According to Bitonti, “Whether it’s $1,000 or $70 million, the process of prize claim review is always the same.”
To expedite the process, the OLG encourages winners to claim their prizes promptly. Failing to remember ticket purchase details can lead to delays, sometimes extending the process over several weeks. “If you wait a year or a little less than a year, you may forget that information,” Bitonti explained, noting that many winners often misplace their tickets or forget where they bought them.
Details and Investigations
If a claimant struggles to recall important purchase details, OLG staff may provide guidance to help jog their memory; however, specifics about the ticket’s content will not be disclosed during the interview. If problems persist or if there’s any ambiguity in the claims process, the case may be escalated to the OLG’s investigations team, which could further extend the waiting period.
In exceptional cases, such as that of a Hamilton woman who claimed a $50 million prize despite losing her ticket, the OLG may conduct even deeper investigations. This can involve reviewing security footage from the store where the ticket was allegedly bought or validating the claim based on additional proof, like credit card transactions.

In the interest of transparency, the OLG discloses the identities of all individuals who win prizes greater than $1,000.
