Severe weather has struck the West Midlands, causing significant flash flooding and travel disruption. Both commuters and local residents are facing a challenging situation as heavy rain continues to fall across the region.
Weather Warnings in Place
The Met Office has issued two weather warnings for the West Midlands—a yellow and an amber warning—particularly affecting the Black Country area. The amber warning is set to remain in effect until Friday morning, warning residents of potentially dangerous conditions.
- Heavy Rain Expected: Rainfall estimates suggest that some areas may receive 30-40mm within three hours, and up to 60mm over six hours.
- Increased Flood Risk: The warnings highlight the risk of flooding on already saturated ground and the possibility of transport disruptions.

Travel disruptions are prevalent throughout the region, affecting roads, buses, and train services:
- Road Closures: Numerous roads were shut down, including Bournville Road in Birmingham and Blackwell Road in Worcestershire.
- Train Services Halted: Trains between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury were canceled due to flooding on railway lines around Telford. Replacement bus services are now being utilized.
- Bus Service Adjustments: National Express has altered several bus routes due to flooded conditions and is accepting rail tickets from certain lines.
Emergency Responses
Emergency services have been actively assisting affected civilians, reflecting the pressing need for support during this natural event:
- Fire Rescues: West Midlands Fire Service intervened after responding to a call from a stranded driver in Selly Oak, whose vehicle was submerged in flood water. The service noted, “The driver said water was up to his seat.”
- Stadium Flooding: AFC Telford United’s pitch at the SEAH Stadium was completely flooded, leading to the cancellation of a scheduled match against Monaco.
School Closures
Due to the severe weather conditions, many schools in the Birmingham area are closed. Some of the affected schools include:

- Northfield Longwill School for the Deaf
- St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School
These closures are in effect as safety becomes the top priority during the flooding.
