A 76-year-old man from Powys is expressing profound gratitude after the quick actions of medical personnel saved his life following a cardiac arrest at a Katherine Jenkins concert. Alwyn Williams collapsed while attending the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in July, a moment that could have had a tragic outcome if not for the rapid response of onsite medical staff and community responders.
Heroic Actions at the Concert
During the well-attended festival in North Wales, Alwyn Williams experienced a sudden cardiac event after enjoying the performance. Described as slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle, Williams was transported quickly from his parking spot by the onsite medical team from MediEvent.
Once he was safely in their care, the medical team administered critical life-saving treatments, including the use of a defibrillator to restart Williams’ heart. Their prompt intervention was crucial, as they were able to stabilize him before additional help arrived.
Community Responders Arrive
Community First Responders Emma Lawrenson and Richard Witheridge, who had just completed their training, rushed to the scene after a 999 call alerting them to a cardiac arrest nearby. They arrived just minutes after the first responders and worked closely with MediEvent staff to ensure Williams received the best possible care.
Richard Witheridge recounted the event, stating, “We were just coming to the end of our shift and decided to have one last drive around the area before logging off. As we approached the car park, we received an alert notifying us of a confirmed cardiac arrest just 100 metres from our location.”
Their collaboration with the MediEvent team was instrumental in achieving a quick recovery for Williams.
A Grateful Survivor
Now recovering at home with his wife Judith, Alwyn Williams is reflective about the incident. He admits, “I don’t remember anything about the incident at all, but what I do know is that I’m incredibly grateful to the medical staff who saved my life.” His son, a police sergeant, underscored the potential severity of the situation, emphasizing that without the immediate medical intervention, the outcome could have been drastically different.
