Around 11 p.m. on Friday, a fire erupted in a barn at The Big E fairgrounds, raising alarm among horse owners and event staff. Fortunately, quick action from grounds workers and emergency responders ensured the safety of 161 horses, all of which have been accounted for and are now recovering from minor injuries.

The Incident at The Big E

The fire occurred in the C Barn, which houses several stables, located between the Coliseum and state buildings on the Eastern States Exposition grounds in West Springfield, Massachusetts. The blaze broke out shortly after The Big E closed for the night, prompting a swift evacuation of the horses housed inside.

According to Anne-Alise Pietruska, the interim director of marketing for The Big E, a vigilant exhibitor noticed smoke and quickly worked to free the horses. “An exhibitor on the grounds, once they saw the smoke, went into the barn and opened the stalls, as many as they could,” she recounted.

Firefighters arrived shortly after the fire started, around 11:45 p.m., and their response, combined with the automated sprinkler system, contained the fire to a manageable size. All the horses were successfully evacuated, though not without a scare.

Quick Action Saves Horses

The sprinkler system activated and limited the fire’s spread, but it startled the horses, causing some to bolt. Thankfully, all runaway horses have now been accounted for. “The horses did get spooked by the sprinkler system, but it effectively put out the fire immediately,” Pietruska said.

Among those on-site were several employees who suffered minor injuries during the incident. They have since received treatment and are recovering well. The damage to the barn was minimal, and operations will continue as normal, according to Big E officials.

Investigation Underway

The West Springfield Fire Association, alongside state police assigned to the fire marshal’s office, is conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire. While the specific details of what ignited the blaze are still unclear, officials are working diligently to determine the source.

“We are grateful for the prompt response from our team and authorities, plus all exhibitors who are supporting each other during this transition,” the Big E stated in a press release.

In light of the incident, adjustments were made to programming for the evening. The scheduled 4-H Horse Show was moved to the Coliseum, allowing the event to proceed without major disruptions.

Community Support Shines

The incident showcased not only the swift actions of individuals on-site but also the strong support network among exhibitors and staff. Many horse owners came together, providing assistance and reassurance during the chaotic moments following the fire.

Despite the scare, The Big E is moving forward. Normal activities resumed the next day, with numerous visitors and participants excited to experience the fair’s offerings. The Big E runs through September 29, featuring a variety of attractions, contests, and other events.

As the investigation continues and safety measures are reviewed, officials remain focused on ensuring that events can proceed without further incidents. The collective effort of the community amidst an unexpected situation has underscored the spirit of teamwork and preparedness in the face of adversity.

The incident at The Big E shows us how important it is to act quickly during emergencies. Because so many people helped, all the horses are safe, and everything will go back to normal. The Big E fair is still a busy place, celebrating our traditions and bringing the community together in Massachusetts.
