In an impressive recognition of academic excellence, Howard University has been named the top historically Black college or university (HBCU) in the United States by Forbes magazine in its 2024-2025 America’s Top Colleges rankings. This distinction highlights Howard’s commitment to fostering successful graduates from diverse economic backgrounds while maintaining lower student debt levels.
Ranking Highlights and Methodology
Forbes’ annual list evaluates 500 institutions based on several key factors, including return on investment, average student debt, and graduate outcomes. The ranking takes into account various metrics such as freshman-to-sophomore retention rates, on-time graduation rates, and alumni salaries. Howard University’s position not only as the top HBCU but also among the top 100 colleges in the Northeast underscores its academic rigor and commitment to student success. Specifically, Howard secured the 95th spot in the overall Northeast rankings.
Alongside Howard, other well-regarded HBCUs that were listed by Forbes include Spelman College, Morehouse College, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, North Carolina A&T State University, and Hampton University. The inclusion of six HBCUs in this year’s rankings, compared to three last year, indicates a growing recognition of the value that these institutions provide to their students and communities.

The Forbes ranking arrives as Howard University is experiencing a significant rise in enrollment, a trend buoyed by its groundbreaking initiatives. Recently, the university received a record-breaking $175 million gift from Bloomberg Philanthropies, aimed at enhancing its College of Medicine and expanding public health education for future health professionals of color.
Additionally, Howard is home to the first U.S. Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Center at an HBCU, fueled by a $90 million grant from the U.S. Air Force. The Forbes recognition occurs during a critical period for higher education, particularly amidst shifts in admissions processes and challenges for HBCUs. High school seniors are currently navigating college applications under circumstances where traditional affirmative action policies have been altered. This environment has seen several predominantly white institutions, including elite colleges, report declines in Black student enrollment.
In response, Forbes’ list aims to showcase institutions that offer high-quality education without highly exclusive admission rates. Notably, 38 of the top 100 schools on the list have acceptance rates exceeding 30%, with 16 admitting over 50% of applicants. This focus aims to alleviate anxieties surrounding college admissions, especially for students from underrepresented backgrounds.
