In an effort to combat stigma and increase awareness around dementia, Rutland is set to host a significant event on October 25. Journalist and television presenter Angela Rippon will join local MP Alicia Kearns for the discussion titled “Let’s Talk About Dementia,” aiming to address the concerning diagnosis rates in the community.

Let’s Talk About Dementia: A Community Initiative

The event will take place at The Barnsdale from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM. It is free for all Rutlanders and encourages local businesses, community organizations, charities, and health professionals to attend. Through this initiative, attendees will gain valuable insights into making Rutland a more dementia-friendly county.

Angela Rippon, an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society, will chair the event, sharing her expertise and perspective as someone who has advocated for dementia awareness for years. Kearns stated, “I am so grateful to Angela Rippon and the amazing panel of experts who are kindly giving up their time to support Rutland’s Great Dementia Conversation and our efforts to become the First Dementia Friendly County in the country.”

This event is part of a broader effort to increase awareness and understanding around dementia in Rutland, where the current diagnosis rates are alarmingly below the national average.

Dementia Diagnosis in Rutland: A Call to Action

Recent statistics reveal that dementia diagnosis rates in Rutland are over 10% lower than the national average. According to the NHS, only 53.9% of people with dementia in Rutland are diagnosed, compared to the national rate of 65%. This discrepancy means that many who need support may not be receiving it.

Alicia Kearns has been vocal about her commitment to improving these figures. “I launched Rutland’s Great Dementia Conversation because it was the number one health concern for Rutland,” she said. “My goal was to break down barriers and myths surrounding dementia, encouraging people to seek diagnoses and access support.”

Understanding the Importance of Early Diagnosis

Kearns emphasizes the need for early diagnosis, stating that timely support can significantly improve the lives of both individuals with dementia and their families. She explained, “The sooner you get support for dementia, the sooner you, as the family, along with the person living with dementia, can receive the help you need.”

Community awareness plays a crucial role in addressing the challenges faced by those with dementia. Kearns stated, “If someone has dementia and they’re having a crisis in public, if our community becomes more dementia friendly and aware, we can better support those individuals.”

Upcoming Initiatives and Community Engagement

As part of her campaign, Kearns has also announced that the Alzheimer’s Society will conduct three “Dementia Friends Information Sessions” throughout October. These sessions, led by trained facilitators, aim to enhance understanding of dementia and educate community members on how to support those affected.

In addition, Kearns plans to hold market stalls in Oakham and Uppingham to further promote awareness and provide resources about dementia.

Empowering the Community

The relaunch of Rutland’s Great Dementia Conversation is rooted in a collective goal: to build supportive communities that are better equipped to handle the challenges presented by dementia. Kearns believes that through education, conversation, and community involvement, Rutland can change the narrative surrounding dementia.

“Better understanding of dementia will lead to earlier diagnoses in the area,” Kearns said. “That is our hope.”

Conclusion: A Step Towards a Dementia-Friendly Community

The upcoming “Let’s Talk About Dementia” event is an important opportunity for Rutland residents to engage with experts and learn how to foster a supportive environment for those living with dementia. By participating in this conversation, community members can help bridge the gap between awareness and action, ultimately aiding in the diagnosis and support of those who need it.

As Rutland moves toward its goal of becoming the first dementia-friendly county in the UK, community participation, increased understanding, and empathy will be essential in shaping a more inclusive future for all residents.
