The Chase’s Jenny Ryan, known as The Vixen, has shared insights into how she manages nerves while quizzing and performing. As she prepares to embark on her UK tour for her cabaret show, “Out of the Box,” Ryan opened up about the emotional aspects of being in the spotlight during an interview with virginradio.co.uk.
Understanding the Nerves of Performance
Ryan highlighted that quizzing and performing are vastly different experiences. After years of participating in the popular quiz show “The Chase,” she describes quizzing as having become almost second nature for her. “I go into a different gear, and tend not to think about how objectively terrifying it is,” Ryan explained. She acknowledged that the thought of millions watching can be daunting. “If I were to think: ‘Wow, four or five million people are going to watch me if I make a mistake now,’ it would be impossible to do the job,” she stated.
Performance Challenges and Rewards
Despite her extensive background in quizzing, Ryan admitted that performing live is more intimidating for her. She expressed that interacting with a live audience of hundreds heightens her nerves. “It’s quite intimidating seeing all those faces looking up at me,” she said, emphasizing her concern for the audience’s experience. “But the nerves are only there because I want to have a lovely time and make sure everybody else has a lovely time. And that’s the joy of show business.”
Connection with the Audience
Ryan finds live performances rewarding, noting the privilege of sharing an intimate experience with her audience. “I’ve got the privilege of being on TV and not having to look people in the eye, whereas in theater, we’re all in that same room together,” she reflected. This direct interaction enriches her performances and is something she values greatly.
The Balance Between Quizzing and Performing
While Ryan enjoys the thrill of performing, she remains committed to her role on “The Chase.” “Quizzing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember… it’s one of the first things I remember doing with my granddad when I was very small,” she recalled. Her connection to quizzing is deep-rooted, and she considers her position on “The Chase” a dream job. “I love television, I love making people happy, I love quizzes. So why would I want to give that up?” Ryan stated.
The Future of ‘The Chase’
As “The Chase” nears its 15th anniversary, Ryan expressed hope for the show’s longevity. “I hope it goes for another 15 because it’s such a wonderful job to have,” she affirmed. This dedication to quizzing indicates that despite her passion for performing, her roots will always lie in quiz-based entertainment.
