Muscat’s skies are set to brighten as Oman Air announces its first new route in five years, connecting the capital to Rome. This strategic move comes as the airline embarks on a significant restructuring plan aimed at enhancing its fleet utilization and achieving financial recovery.
New Route to Rome
From December 20, 2024, Oman Air will offer four direct flights per week between Muscat and Rome. This route not only reinforces Oman Air’s commitment to providing travel options but also opens new gateways from Italy to the Gulf, Asia, and the Indian subcontinent.
CEO Con Korfiatis stated, “We see good outbound opportunities for Oman, as well as inbound traffic from Italy, particularly during our peak season.” This move expands Oman Air’s existing services, complementing its flights to Milan and enhancing connections between Oman and key European destinations.
Strategic Vision for Recovery
Oman Air has faced financial challenges over the years, with its performance deemed unsustainable. Korfiatis highlighted that the airline’s operations, established over 30 years ago, have not undergone significant transformation. “We need to justify our existence, to earn the right to continue being the flag carrier,” he said.
To propel itself toward financial stability, the airline has initiated a series of crucial changes, including:
- Network size reduction: Earlier this year, Oman Air cut its network capacity by 30%, discontinuing unprofitable routes.
- Fleet simplification: By early next year, all widebody services will shift exclusively to Boeing 787-9 aircraft, while a transition to 737-8 for narrowbody operations is expected by mid-2026.
A Step Toward Growth
The airline’s restructuring plan is not about becoming smaller; rather, it sets the stage for future growth. Korfiatis emphasized, “The end game is to shrink, fix the foundations, and then go back to a growth agenda.” The goal is to balance Oman Air’s role as a point-to-point carrier with that of a regional transit hub, aligning with Oman’s Vision 2040 tourism goals.
Previously reliant on transit traffic, the airline seeks to achieve a 50/50 balance between connecting and destination traffic. This strategic shift aims to enhance the overall experience for travelers while supporting the country’s tourism development.
Commitment to Quality
The airline’s adjustments are designed to improve service quality and operational efficiency. “We’re running a marathon, not a sprint. There are significant milestones along the path, and the work has already begun,” Korfiatis noted. This long-term vision reflects a determination to reposition Oman Air as a key player in the aviation industry.
With the introduction of the Rome route, Oman Air aims to attract both tourists to Oman and Omanis traveling to Italy. This expansion aligns with the airline’s broader strategy to enhance tourism and connectivity in the region.
Looking Ahead
Oman Air is optimistic about its future prospects and remains focused on rebuilding its airline network while ensuring financial stability. With new routes like the direct flight to Rome, the airline is not only investing in its growth but also in the future of Oman’s tourism industry.
As Routes World 2024 unfolds in Bahrain, Oman Air’s plans signify a revitalization in the airline industry, aiming for seamless connectivity between regions while contributing positively to the economy.
As the first flights to Rome take off, travelers can anticipate a rejuvenated Oman Air committed to enhancing their travel experiences while laying the groundwork for a prosperous future in aviation.
