GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — As the Green Bay Packers prepare for their 2024 NFL season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles in São Paulo, Brazil, on September 6, wide receiver Christian Watson enters the campaign with newfound optimism regarding his health and performance. After a tumultuous start to his professional career plagued by hamstring injuries, Watson is determined to play a full season without interruptions, aiming to tap into the potential he showcased during his rookie year.
Setting the Stage for a Healthy Season
In his first two seasons, Watson has been an exceptional deep threat but has struggled with inconsistent availability, missing 11 games due to hamstring issues. Following a promising campaign where he scored eight touchdowns over a four-game stretch, he faced challenges last season, playing through injuries and unable to replicate his previous performance levels.
“In my mind, if I’m able to be out there, I’m going to find a way to make plays,” Watson stated. After completing a healthy training camp, he expressed hope that he has a better grip on managing his hamstring issues this year. “This is how it’s supposed to be,” he added. “It’s supposed to be 100%. I want to play 100% of the games. I want to play 100% of the practices. I’m right where I want to be.”
Addressing Hamstring Concerns
Watson’s previous injuries, including a significant hamstring ailment forcing him to miss key games last season, prompted him to seek solutions during the offseason. He collaborated with teammate Eric Stokes and visited the University of Wisconsin’s Badger Athletic Performance center, known for its $4 million NFL-funded research project on preventing and treating hamstring injuries.
This initiative yielded significant insights for Watson, who discovered asymmetrical strength between his legs — his left leg had about 20% greater strength than his right. Such imbalances can increase injury susceptibility, as highlighted by Bryan Heiderscheit, director of Badger Athletic Performance. He explained that extreme asymmetry might put undue stress on one side, causing chronic issues.
“It really was the asymmetry between the legs,” Watson noted, attributing the persistent injuries to the disparity in strength. “I’ve been attacking the strength side of it, trying to get that symmetry back, and it’s been huge for me. I feel really, really good.” He reported transitioning to a more balanced condition, achieving near symmetry before training camp started.
Watson’s Potential and Pittsburgh’s Attitude
Recognizing the importance of maintaining his health, Watson is optimistic about contributing significantly to the Packers’ offense. His ability to stay injury-free could enable him to become a focal point in the receiving corps, which includes teammates like Romeo Doubs and Jayden Reed. Coach Matt LaFleur acknowledged Watson’s crucial role, stating, “He’s a big, physical, fast guy, and not many of those guys exist. We’re certainly a better offense when he’s at full strength.”
Watson’s urgency is underscored by his aspirations to improve upon his 2023 season performance, where he collected 28 receptions for 422 yards and five touchdowns over just nine games. He remains optimistic about displaying the breakout talent he exhibited during his rookie season.
Jayden Reed’s Emerging Star
Alongside Watson, wide receiver Jayden Reed is poised for a notable sophomore season. Drafted in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft from Michigan State, Reed quickly became one of Love’s primary targets, leading the Packers in receptions, receiving yards, and tying for the most receiving touchdowns in his rookie year.
Reed’s average draft position (ADP) for the upcoming 2024 fantasy football season places him as a potential top-30 receiver, with expectations that he will take a significant leap in his development. With a solid 68.1% catch rate and impressive numbers — including 793 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in his debut season — Reed is expected to play a larger role in the offense.
The departure of Aaron Jones to the rival Vikings could further enhance Reed’s opportunities, as he looks to increase his target share. Draft analysts suggest that Reed could end up as Love’s leading target, making him a strategic choice for fantasy football players.
Expectations for the Season Ahead
As the Packers ramp up for their season opener against the Eagles, Watson and Reed represent key elements in the team’s offensive strategy. With quarterback Jordan Love leading the charge, the Packers have high hopes for a successful season, aiming for a deep playoff run.
“If we can stay healthy, we could have an amazing offense,” Watson said. He really believes the team can play well. With Watson feeling more confident and Reed’s great skills, it looks like the Green Bay Packers are ready for an exciting season in the NFL. They’re aiming to make a big impact this year!
