Shree Airlines to Launch Kathmandu-Bharatpur Flights Ahead of Dashain
KATHMANDU, Sept 15: Shree Airlines is set to commence flights between Kathmandu and Bharatpur just in time for the Dashain festival, significantly enhancing air travel options in the region. The airline is currently in the final stages of securing necessary permissions from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN). With an aim to leverage the bustling travel season, Shree Airlines is preparing to deploy a 72-seater ATR aircraft for these flights.
Background and Aircraft Details
In a strategic move, Shree Airlines conducted a successful test flight on June 17 between Kathmandu and Bharatpur, signaling readiness for commercial operations. Anil Manandhar, the airline’s manager, expressed optimism about initiating flights shortly after securing final approvals. We are confident that all procedures will be completed in a day or two,” Manandhar stated, emphasizing the airline’s commitment to enhancing travel convenience.
Current Air Travel Landscape
Presently, the Kathmandu-Bharatpur route is operated solely by Buddha Air, using 42-seater aircraft and charging a considerable fare of approximately NPR 4,700 for a one-way ticket. Despite the flight duration being a brief 20 minutes, passengers have often found the airfare to be a financial burden. The introduction of Shree Airlines with its larger capacity aircraft is anticipated to lead to a reduction in ticket prices and improved service for travelers.
Airport Infrastructure and Expansion Plans
Bharatpur Airport, noted for its relatively short 1,200-meter runway, has been a focal point of ongoing infrastructural upgrades. The existing runway limitations currently restrict the operation of larger aircraft and night flights. Plans are underway to extend the runway to 1,600 meters, utilizing land from the nearby Nepal Army Horse Reproduction Center. Meanwhile, a new terminal building is under construction, aimed at accommodating increasing passenger traffic and enhancing overall airport functionality.
The Competitive Edge
Shree Airlines’ foray into the Bharatpur route comes at a time when competition in the aviation sector is intensifying. Following Shree Airlines’ successful test flights with an 80-seater aircraft, there is growing interest from other airlines to enter this lucrative market. Buddha Air, responding to this competitive landscape, has begun testing a 72-seater aircraft to ensure it retains its market hold.
Future Developments
As Shree Airlines prepares to launch its commercial flights to Bharatpur, the emphasis on customer convenience and cost-effectiveness will be key drivers of its strategy. Manandhar noted, “With the introduction of larger aircraft, we believe the fare structures will also reflect a downward trend, improving travel accessibility for passengers.”
The anticipated commencement of flights before Dashain signifies not only a milestone for Shree Airlines but also a positive shift for passengers who seek more affordable and efficient travel options. The increase in air traffic is expected to bring substantial benefits to the local economy and enhance the overall connectivity of Bharatpur with Kathmandu.
