“Saturday Night Live” Welcomes New Faces for Milestone 50th Season
Saturday Night Live (SNL) is gearing up for its landmark 50th season with an exciting lineup of new talent. Joining the cast are Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim, and Jane Wickline, who will step in as featured players when the show premieres on September 28, 2024. In a notable transition, Chloe Troast, who has been with the show since Season 49, will not be returning.
Meet the New Cast Members
Ashley Padilla
Ashley Padilla is making waves as a member of the Groundlings, an esteemed improvisational and sketch comedy troupe in Los Angeles, since 2021. Known for her comedic performances, she has also made guest appearances on popular shows such as HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm and NBC’s Night Court. With this new opportunity at SNL, Padilla aims to showcase her talent on a larger stage.
Emil Wakim
Emil Wakim, a Lebanese American stand-up comedian, is also set to make his mark on SNL. Wakim made his late-night television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2022 and was recognized as a “New Face of Comedy” at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival the same year. With a background that includes opening for established comics like Roy Wood Jr. and Hasan Minhaj, Wakim brings a rich comedic experience to the ensemble.
Jane Wickline
Jane Wickline, who has gained a strong following on TikTok with her live show Stapleview, is known for her engaging comedy bits that have collectively accumulated over 45 million likes. An emerging talent in the comedy scene, Wickline’s acting credits also include the upcoming film My First Film, set to debut in 2024.
Changes in the SNL Roster
As SNL transitions into its 50th season, some familiar faces will not return. Chloe Troast, who had expressed her disappointment in not being invited back, conveyed her gratitude for the time spent with her colleagues. In an Instagram post, Troast shared, “I wish I was going back to be with all the amazing friends I made there, it truly felt like home. But it wasn’t in the cards.” In addition to Troast, Punkie Johnson will also depart the show after four seasons, and Molly Kearney will exit after two seasons.
Meanwhile, the show is promoting Marcello Hernandez, Michael Longfellow, and Devon Walker from featured players to the main cast. The forthcoming season will see the return of many veteran cast members, ensuring a blend of fresh talent and seasoned performers.
Looking Ahead
The 50th season promises to be a milestone event for SNL, with celebrations, reunions, and surprise guest appearances planned throughout the year. Highlights include a three-hour live primetime special scheduled for February 16, 2025. This special will commemorate the show’s enduring legacy and its impact on American television.
Noteworthy is the anticipated return of former cast member Maya Rudolph, who is set to reprise her role portraying Vice President Kamala Harris in the lead-up to the 2024 Presidential election. Having been recognized for her portrayal during the previous election cycle, Rudolph’s return is sure to draw attention from audiences eager to see how current events will be infused with humor.
