The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2024 is set to officially begin today, with the highlight being the premiere of “The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal.” Directed by Mike Downie, brother of the late Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie, this four-part documentary chronicles the band’s journey from their formation in Kingston, Ontario, in 1984 to their remarkable 40-year career in the music industry.
Mike Downie described the process of creating the documentary as both the hardest and most fulfilling experience of his life, especially as it involved revisiting his brother’s battle with cancer and his subsequent passing in 2017. The extensive work included over 60 interviews with band members, family, friends, and notable figures, aiming to capture the band’s impact on Canadian culture and identify why they resonate so deeply with fans.
The documentary is structured around segments named after Tragically Hip songs and strives to answer pivotal questions about the band’s significance and its representation of Canadian experiences. Scheduled for release on Prime Video on September 20, it aims to reach a global audience, highlighting the band’s legacy beyond Canada.
TIFF will host the documentary’s world premiere at The Royal Alexandra Theatre, followed by a public sing-along event led by Choir!Choir!Choir!, celebrating the band’s music in a festive atmosphere. With a lineup of high-profile celebrities expected to attend TIFF, the festival promises a vibrant showcase of films, including more than 270 selections.
While Mike Downie expressed pride in the documentary, he also reflected on the emotional difficulty of sharing this personal story. He noted the importance of creating a space for open discussion among band members and recognizing the close relationships they share, which contributed to the film’s authenticity.
Besides the exciting documentary screenings, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is also changing how people get around the city. There will be some street closures and changes to public transit during the festival. TIFF happens from September 5 to September 15, which is an important time for Toronto’s arts and culture!
