Tactical Evacuation Ordered in Southeast B.C. Community Due to Wildfire Risk

A wildfire in southeast British Columbia has prompted a “tactical evacuation” in the Baynes Lake area. The situation escalated rapidly, leading the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) to implement an Evacuation Order affecting 10 properties west of the community. Emergency responders have mobilized to ensure the safety of residents as the fire continues to burn out of control in the region.

Details of the Evacuation Order

The Evacuation Order, issued on September 9, 2024, targets specifically designated properties impacted by the Kikomun Wildfire, which has expanded to an estimated four hectares. The blaze is receiving a full response from local fire crews and the BC Wildfire Service, which has confirmed that the fire is suspected to be human-caused.

“There was a tactical evacuation performed by RDEK firefighters in response to the rapidly evolving situation,” stated Loree Duczek, Information Officer for the Regional Emergency Operations Centre. “Everyone was able to get out safely,” she assured, as firefighters worked to contain the raging flames.

In addition to the Evacuation Order, an Evacuation Alert has been issued for an additional 42 properties near the affected area, which serves as a precautionary measure as conditions remain severe.

Emergency Response Efforts Underway

The response to the Kikomun Wildfire includes eight fire apparatus and 15 firefighters from local fire departments in Jaffray, Baynes Lake, and Elko. They are supported by air resources and a dedicated crew from the BC Wildfire Service. Efforts to mitigate the risk of the fire spreading further are ongoing, and updates will be provided regularly.

A Reception Centre has been established for displaced residents at the Baker Salon located at the Prestige Inn in Cranbrook. Evacuees are encouraged to register either in person at the Reception Centre, which is open until 11 p.m., or online at the BC Emergency Services website.

Community members can stay informed about the evolving situation by contacting the RDEK emergency information line at 250-426-2188 or toll-free at 1-855-346-2188. Additionally, the latest updates regarding the wildfire status can be accessed through the BC Wildfire Service website.

Current Conditions and Ongoing Concerns

The province of British Columbia has been battling approximately 220 active wildfires in recent weeks, with burning conditions exacerbated by above-normal temperatures and ongoing drought conditions across much of the region. These circumstances have left local landscapes extremely dry. Environment Canada had previously issued air-quality warnings, particularly affecting certain districts, though most have now been lifted.

The alert regarding the Kikomun Wildfire follows this trend of heightened fire activity. Reports indicate that while the majority of wildfires in B.C. are caused by lightning, human error plays a significant role, especially during these dryer seasons.

The RDEK has declared a State of Local Emergency for Electoral Area B in alignment with the Evacuation Order. This organizational status allows for additional resources and support to be allocated to combat the wildfire and assist affected residents.

As things change, officials are asking everyone to stay alert and ready for new information. They want to make sure our community stays safe.
