Homecoming Traditions and Safety Measures
Homecoming Weekend at Western University has always drawn huge crowds, and this year’s event marks the 75th anniversary of the celebration. Traditionally, Broughdale Avenue becomes a hub of festive activities, with music, food, and often unsanctioned street parties. However, this year’s celebrations are tinged with caution due to both the union strike and heightened safety measures from local authorities.
The Unsanctioned Street Party Task Force, established in 2019, will be on high alert. The City of London and the London Police Service (LPS) are committed to enforcing local laws throughout the festivities. The police have indicated that there will be an increased presence in the area, especially focusing on by-law enforcement related to noise, underage drinking, and public disturbances.
“LPS will be firm but fair in our efforts to enforce the applicable laws,” stated the police department. Their priority remains the safety of everyone involved, emphasizing that streets will remain accessible at all times. Last year, the police issued a staggering 315 charges during Homecoming, pointing to the challenges encountered in managing large crowds.
Union Strike Context
Simultaneously, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 2361 (CUPE 2361) will continue their strike this weekend. The union, representing tradespeople, caretakers, and groundskeepers, has been advocating for better wages since August 30. Despite the ongoing festivities, they remain vigilant, with union vice-president Chris Yates confirming that picketing will persist throughout Homecoming.
“We’re going to be here just like we’ve been here since the strike started,” Yates remarked, hinting at the determination of union members to make their voices heard even amidst the celebrations.
Western University has acknowledged the ongoing strike, stating that campus road closures will remain in place until the conclusion of the union’s actions, ensuring a safe environment for both picketers and community members alike.
